Unisys veteran, Vic Herring, has described the company’s breakthrough fabric-based architecture as the most exciting technology he has been involved with in 40 years in the industry.
The Unisys APAC program manager officially launched Forward!, a fabric-based solution which brings unmatched levels of security, scalability and predictable performance to workloads running Intel servers, in Sydney.
The new platform combines combines Unisys’ advanced secure partitioning (s-Par) technology with Intel Xeon family processors and virtualization technology into a powerful, secure, highly flexible fabric architecture able to handle clients’ most demanding mission-critical computing challenges on an industry-standard platform.
Herring, who has 40 years experience in the IT industry, including 21 years at Unisys, said the platform was built on a flexible secure fabric which was technology agnostic.
“As you get into the fabric lifestyle, we may change the technology underneath but it shouldn’t affect you and you should be able to build on it,” he said.
“This is something a bit different and special. We’re attacking the open market and it’s a bit frightening. It’s scary because we will take over.”
Unisys estimates that, compared to Unix systems, the Forward! platform can cut capital expenses by between 50 to 60 per cent and reduce total cost of ownership by up to 40 per cent.
Compared to physical Linux or Windows environments, a partitioned Forward! platform can eliminate up to 70 per cent of physical servers and reduce software licensing and hardware maintenance costs by as much as 70 per cent.
The platform also increases organizational speed by cutting server provisioning time for mission-critical workloads from weeks to hours.
It provides these benefits while delivering mission-critical security and predictability compared to standard virtualised environments.
With its use of secure partitioning technology, media agnostic high speed interconnect and unified system management capabilities, it addresses performance and security concerns by providing flexibility and the cost benefits of virtualisation with the predictable performance of proprietary Unix system.
All of the nodes of the fabric are connected through high-speed InfiniBand links that reduce latency and enhance failover capability. Nodes can be added to the fabric to create a system that is virtually limitless.
Initially, the platform will use Xeon E5 processors, but E7 processors will be used for future models.
Unisys chief executive Ed Coleman said organisations no longer need to choose between the predictability and security of proprietary systems and the flexibility and cost savings of Linux and Windows systems.
"With Forward!, they can choose one platform for their mission-critical workloads that gives them the performance and security that they need today while providing the flexibility to manage new applications and disruptive technologies as they emerge,” he said.
