Allan Dornan of IAG: Sleeping rough to support homeless people

Joins business and community leaders in annual Lifewise Big Sleepout to raise funds for the homeless.

Business and community leaders have opted to become ‘rough sleepers for a cause’ tomorrow night in Auckland’s central business district.

They will try to sleep in "a secure and largely exposed area within Auckland’s CBD" with little more than a sleeping bag and a sheet of cardboard. The goal is to raise funds for Lifewise’s campaign to end homelessness and provide a range of solutions for this group.

Allan Dornan, chief operating officer of IAG, is one of those participants. He was previously a CIO at IAG, and was IT manager at Lumley Insurance, before becoming the operations chief.

“Being homeless is not a lifestyle choice,” Dornan tells CIO New Zealand. “Most people are on the streets because they are running away from abuse, are the victims of mental illness, drugs or alcohol or have just been plain unlucky.”

“I'm both surprised and humbled by the number of people who care about this issue and want to lend a hand,” says Dornan, who is joining other IAG executives in this campaign. “Every dollar I will raise will be directly applied to Lifewise’s unique ‘no band aids’ approach to homelessness.”

“I think it's crazy that in a beautiful caring country like ours people are still forced to sleep on the streets,” says Dornan on why he got involved in the campaign. “It could happen to anyone.”
