The provision of a trusted justice system and accessible justice services, and delivery of durable settlements of Treaty claims, are some of the key drivers for the Ministry of Justice in 2009.

Gerard Aberdeen, general manager ICT Services, says IT is critical to delivering these objectives. In addition to a full legislative programme of work, the Ministry will continue to enhance and extend its service delivery capabilities to provide both short and long-term improvements for court users, to advance effective interventions in areas such as youth offending, family violence and organised crime; and to offer greater support to victims of crime.

In 2008 to 2009, the Ministry invested in ICT projects including business continuity and disaster recovery upgrades, remote working technologies and e-business development.

Aberdeen says the largest projects in terms of budget are an organisation-wide upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007 software and systems to support the Auckland Service Delivery project. The Ministry will also invest significantly in virtualisation software and services this year.

A particular focus over the next few years is the increasing demand on systems in the Auckland region, which will likely lead to centres in this region becoming early adopters of priority ICT solutions. Also, as part of enhancing its infrastructure, the Ministry of Justice recently implemented a new Storage Area Network.

The Ministry of Justice outsources backup, systems and network management and help desk functions to Gen-i, which also manages the call centre and datacentre. TechnologyOne provides financial systems services.
