Responding to the rise of IT as an on-demand service, Citrix has this year increased the speed of its product releases and the level of investment in what it considers its most strategic areas of business: virtualisation,
networking and software as a service (SaaS). The company has launched a few major products and upgrades, including its free XenServer virtualisation software, which was downloaded by more than 150,000 users worldwide in the four months to August.

It has also released new a cloud solution product (C3) and signed with Intel to produce virtualisation solutions for Intel Core2 and Centrino 2 processor-based devices.

Laying off about 10 per cent of its global workforce in January helped Citrix combat some of the ill effects of a depressed global economy. As of its second-quarter results in June, net revenue was expected to be flat compared with 2008.

Virtualisation, cloud computing and SaaS will remain key focuses for the company into 2010. Rachael Bolton
