IBM has flagged its Smarter Planet strategy, launched at the tail-end of 2008, as the key focus going into the next 12 months. An IT company’s 21st-century response to the 1990s catch-cry “Think globally, act locally”, the
strategy encourages the implementation of smart technologies like sensors, intelligent software and advanced computer systems to increase efficiency across a range of vital human services.

IBM draws the majority of its revenue from non-US operations - about 65 percent over the past 12 months. Offshore revenues also grew by more than 10 percent in 50 of the company’s 170 operating countries.

Although revenue has been down in the first two quarters of 2009, second-quarter results from July indicate full-year 2009 earnings per share are expected to reach $US9.70, a 50¢ increase over first-quarter predictions.

IBM cites advancement of business analytics as a key priority. Cloud computing will also be a focus. Rachael Bolton
