Kordia’s roots reach back some 60 years, when it was part of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service constructing its radio and television networks across the country. In 2003, Kordia’s predecessor group became an independent state-owned enterprise spanning the Tasman and received its present name in 2006. However, Kordia’s business is changing and the company is moving into phone networks and broadband through its wholly-owned ISP Orcon, and webhosting services through the recently-acquired iSERVE. Satellite and radio technologies supplied by Kordia monitor the safety of boats and shipping crews. Kordia is also investing in the OptiKor trans-Tasman submarine cable and building a nationwide Ethernet-managed WAN, called OnKor.
Through a series of acquisitions in New Zealand and Australia, Kordia has established a framework for change towards next-generation broadband networks. Revenue from the telecommunications sector has increased eight-fold over the past four years, with total group turnover having doubled.
