Canon been challenged by the strong yen and the deteriorating global economic conditions. In the fourth year of the implementation of its Excellent Global Plan, the company has worked to improve not only management quality through timely releases of new products, but also the supply chain management, to lower costs. It has also focused on improving appropriate inventory levels.

Masahiro Osawa, managing director, group executive, finance and accounting, sees economic conditions easing in late 2009. Canon will combat slow sales by introducing competitive new digital camera and inkjet printer products. It expects to boost sales of network MFDs through the launch of a new brand.
