CA needs to improve its image in the market after a tumultuous decade at executive level compounded by local defections and redundancies in the past year. It faces stiff competition from BMC, Hewlett-Packard and IBM in
datacentre automation. In networking and management services, it’s getting a run for its money from HP, IBM, Oracle and Novell.

CA is betting the future on distributing applications beyond the IT department through virtualisation and cloud computing. Besides this year’s 13 new enterprise IT management innovations, it is investing US$50 million on
adding leading edge products to its stable, with a focus on SMEs.

CA is a leader in the on-demand project and portfolio manager market with its CA Clarity, and is a top player in the software as a service sector.

Its continued success will depend on its responses to internal and market challenges. CEO John Swainson will retire at the end of the year. Keith Newman
