Wellington City Council’s 123 IT and information management staff support the ICT needs of the entire council, Wellington Venues and the city’s zoo. According to Julian Moore, director, organisational services, the council looks to focus ICT solutions on customer service, citizen engagement and creating financial capacity. “Our focus for the next 12 months will be on delivering more services online, with the goal of increased service delivery and customer engagement,” he says.
The first part of 2012 will be dedicated to the development of an ICT Strategic Plan focused on maximising the ROI of ICT solutions, rationalisation of the application portfolio, and continued alignment with other councils in the Wellington region.
Financial pressures are expected to increase over the coming period, so the focus will be on maximising the value of a reducing level of spend capacity. Key projects for the coming year include enterprise content management, online services and business performance reporting. Additionally, the council will continue to leverage investments in technologies spanning cloud computing, social media, unified communications, virtualisation, wireless, FMIS, and business continuity/disaster recovery.
The continued requests by employees to use their own devices, such as smartphones and tablets, within the work environment has required that IT developed a BYOD response that enables greater freedom for employees to utilise these devices, while still maintaining security of infrastructure and information.
