Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MIS100 2012)

2011 ranking: 71

Senior IS executive: Mike Pilkington, CIO

Address: 195 Lambton Quay, Wellington

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade appointed Mike Pilkington as its CIO in September 2011. Chief executive John Allen told media at the time that Pilkington’s “experience will be invaluable as we bring our IT and knowledge management teams together to deliver new operating platforms and tools such as the new Orange 11 network, global document management and electronic records”. Allan Sainsbury, former ICT director, is now semi-retired and serves as principal advisor to CIO Mike Pilkington. The latter half of 2011 was dedicated to the Citrix-enabled major transformation project, involving SharePoint, known as Orange 11. Completion of the project was scheduled for the end of 2011. “The Orange 11 project is about delivering a more flexible IT environment for our staff in New Zealand and around the world,” the ministry said in a statement. “It will make it easier to collaborate and share information as well as facilitating improved use of mobile computing.” Two years ago, MFAT installed four IBM servers at its Wellington office. Also in 2010, it sought a panel of three members to deliver Microsoft SharePoint services. The objective was to find members that could supply ad-hoc resources to fill specific skill needs for short to long duration work or deliver agreed outcomes, covering all aspects of the SharePoint product suite from WSS to the MOSS platform for both the 2007 and 2010 offerings.
