AUT University (MIS100 2012)

2011 ranking: 23

Senior IS executive: Liz Gosling, director ICT Services

Address: 55 Wellesley Street East, Auckland

For AUT's four campuses, ICT is an essential platform for enabling the university to achieve its goals. The university’s core activities of ‘Learning & Teaching and Research’ will increasingly seek to make use of ICT, while management and administrative functions will increase their existing heavy reliance on technology. All areas will also need to ensure that they are able to take advantage of the rapidly developing new models of ICT utilisation, notably in relation to mobility.

AUT continues to rapidly evolve its use of technology to match the changing expectations of staff and students, while leveraging developing technology to enhance services and/or make efficiencies or effectiveness improvements. The new strategic plan identifies specifically the importance of technology in supporting the university’s aims. AUT has an ambitious five year technology plan, the implementation of which started early in 2012, and thus spending on projects and staffing is slated to increase this year. Top projects will include a Microsoft Exchange migration, the development of the university’s collaboration spaces and tools, enhanced support for researchers, additional storage and server growth, and the implementation of a new desktop deployment tool over 6000 computers. AUT is building a new learning precinct, housing the Communication School and featuring TV and performance studios, lecture theatres and informal study areas. This precinct will be the focus of a multi discipline team, including ICT Services. Embedding the use of mobile technologies and social media into the teaching and learning environment continue to command attention, driven in part by student demand.
