NZ Police (MIS100 2012)

2011 ranking: 13

Senior IS executive: Murray Mitchell, CTO

Address: Police National HQ, Molesworth Street, Wellington

In July last year, NZ Police advertised for a CIO, during which time the then ICT manager Murray Mitchell filled the role in an acting capacity. NZ Police “had a look at the executive structure and decided we needed to ensure that the most senior person in ICT has the due title and status that the role is set to fulfill in an organisation of our size,” Michael Player, acting deputy commissioner for resource management, told CIO NZ at the time. The CIO role has since been filled by superintendent David Trappitt, as of March this year. Mitchell now serves at CTO, reporting to the CIO. NZ Police has also recently added an information security manager to the IS team, who is required to guarantee business assurance that New Zealand Police critical assets are effectively managed and secure. This role reports to CTO Mitchell. “Technology will be a significant enabler to meet the business outcomes and benefits of policing excellence,” Mitchell says. Though ICT budgets are down, strategic distribution of resources has allowed project and staff numbers to increase this year by as much as five per cent. Investments in business continuity/disaster recovery, infrastructure as a service (IAAS) and unified communications are set to continue from 2011. New attention will be paid to virtualisation projects including the virtualisation of 111 communication centres. This year, key project focus centres around policing excellence for case management, workforce management, rostering to demand and enabling greater mobility for NZ Police’s approximately 12,500 staff.
