IBM New Zealand (MIS100 2012)

2011 ranking: 80

Senior IS executive: Doug Stuart, NZ IT manager

Address: The Majestic Centre, 100 Willis Street, Wellington

“IBM is increasingly focusing on how to take advantage of new and emerging technologies — social networking tools, cloud computing, business analytics, and business process simplification and competences, for example — to drive innovation, positive business transformation and growth for IBM, and our clients,” says NZ IT manager Doug Stuart. IBM’s IT strategy helps drive business growth he explains: Flexibility and mobility mean employees have access to tools that enable flexible and mobile working, allowing them to work virtually anywhere, anytime. The flexibility and mobility options, in turn, enable increased productivity, ensuring that employees don’t lose valuable, productive time because they can’t get online or access the systems they need from wherever they are; and the ability to collaborate — internally and with external partners and suppliers — is supported. Through a combination of consolidation of servers and support, coupled with automation and simplification of IT processes, greater cost efficiencies are realised. Lastly, improved sustainability through consolidation of servers results in less power consumption and a smaller space footprint. ICT budgets for IBM NZ are up by as much as five percent this year. Project focus for 2012 will centre on WAN acceleration, server consolidation, network MPLS and infrastructure upgrades, wireless upgrades, intrusion protection and visitor wireless, and remote site video conferencing. Additional areas of investment include VoIP, mobility, FMIS, social media, unified communications, cloud computing, e-business, CRM, disaster recovery, virtualisation, and network performance and efficiency.
