Formed in 2011, healthAlliance now incorporates the IT services for the Northern Region District Health Boards, including Auckland, Northland, Waitemata, and Counties Manukau.
Johan Vendrig, general manager information services at healthAllliance, leads a 244-strong team that is responsible for over 18,000 screens.

Speaking at the MIS100 event where the results of the research were revealed, Vendrig shared some lessons learned from managing the consolidation, integration and standardisation of the widespread and complex information systems across health providers in the Northern region.
“We’ve had to reprioritise what we want to tackle, and take a good hard look at where we can do better,” says Vendrig, who came to the role after five years as CIO of the Auckland District Health Board.
Vendrig says reining in the disparate IT systems for the different health boards has been challenging but it is important to maintain a clear view of the problems.
“When one in 10 applications go down, it’s easy to get focused on just that one issue. You have to take heart from the other nine, all the things you are doing right,” says Vendrig.
“I’m glad to be able to hear stories about other CIOs who have been in the same place… It’s important to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Vendrig went on to thank his CIO colleagues who gave him advice on leading systems integration at the shared services organisation following last year’s event, only a year into his new role as CIO at healthAlliance.
Also speaking at the MIS100 event were Michele Caminos, managing vice president at Gartner and Paul Muckleston, managing director of Microsoft New Zealand.
The MIS100 Event is sponsored by Microsoft Services and Gentrack.
