Claire Govier resigns as Vodafone CIO

Interim CIO David Moss will continue to execute stack of technology and 'end to market' customer projects.

Vodafone New Zealand CIO Claire Govier has resigned after nearly two years at the telecommunications company. She will leave Vodafone on June 15. David Moss, general manager service transformation, will be interim CIO from that date, she says.

Govier, who worked in the banking and finance sector prior to joining Vodafone, says she will take time off from work for a couple of months and travel with her family.

“I have got two or three things I am looking at the moment,” she says, when asked where her next role will be.

“The great thing about IT there is a huge level of universality in some of the challenges facing businesses,” she says. “All of them have got challenges around change and transformation and the more I have done this kind of stuff over the years the more I think organisations often start in the wrong place because it is all around [managing] people.”

Govier, who manages a team of 130, says the IT group has been busy in the past two years.

She cites the implementation of a new SAP ERP in nine months and under budget as one of the projects she is proud of in her work at Vodafone. The IT team has also done a “huge job” around modernising its infrastructure, she says, citing the virtualisation programme that is well underway.

She says the group is also involved in ‘end to market’ projects like driving mobile apps to customers. Among the most recent is the ‘data angel’ service which helps customers manage “bill shock”. When they reach a certain level on their data bundle, Vodafone sends them a notification text.

“Across IT, we have completely redone the strategy which includes changing our outsourcing and working differently with our suppliers,” she says. The insourcing strategy led to the creation of 100 new roles in IT inside the business. Vodafone NZ has been consistently in the top 50 of MIS100, the report on the largest IT using organisations in New Zealand. In an interview with CIO early this year, she discussed how Vodafone has had a headstart in managing key challenges faced by other CIOs – the rise of a more mobile force and the BYOD trend. “We have been embracing the real-time way of working for a number of years,” explains Govier. This means staff can work independently of their location.

“None of our staff have fixed phones, all have mobile phones, email and remote access,” she says.
