Compac takes top gong at NZ Hi-Tech Awards

Sorting equipment manufacturer takes home two awards.

Sorting and grading machine manufacturer Compac Sorting Equipment took home the top honours at this year’s New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards.

Compac won the PwC NZ Hi-Tech Company of the Year, as well as the NZMEA Hi-Tech Exporter of the Year (over $5 million category), the same award it won in 2010.

The judges described Compac as the 'Rolls Royce' of its industry and said they were particularly impressed by the market-driven research and development undertaken by the company.

The other company to take home double honours this year was Booktrack, which won the Duncan Cotterill Innovative Software Product Award, and the Vodafone Most Innovative Mobile Technology Award.

Booktrack creates e-books which are synchronised with background music which changes as a person proceeds through the story. Judges said Booktrack has the potential to become the kind of fast-growth, high-returns technology business that New Zealand wants to foster.

Wayne Norrie, chair of NZ Hi-Tech Trust, says New Zealand needs to celebrate the contribution New Zealand's $20 billion IT industry makes to the economy, which is surpassed only by dairy and tourism.

Technology makes more than wool, and more than wine, but we make about as much fuss as the mushroom industry,” he says.

But Norrie added that there are positive signs in IT, with a record number of entries to this year’s awards, including over 30 finalists. Around 740 people attended the awards event, which were held at Auckland’s SkyCity Convention Centre.
