Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies at 56

Apple's co-founder dies shortly after stepping down as CEO, the company has confirmed

Apple's co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has died. The company has made the official announcement on its website. "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," the company says on its website.

Jobs had stepped down from his CEO role on 24 August, after years battling with cancer.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," Apple's board of directors said in a statement. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

Jobs was 56 years old. He is survived by his wife, Laurene, and four children.
