Key IS projects this year: Windows 7 64 bit deployment; implementation of group wide MPLS network; continued ITIL evolution; development of collaboration environment; outsourcing of datacentre; Microsoft Lync deployment.

This will be a busy year for the IS team at Beca Group. A Windows 7 64-bit deployment is planned for the local, Australian and Asian arms of the business, as is implementation of a group-wide MPLS network, development of the Project Delivery System; improvement of the collaboration environment, and deployment of Microsoft Lync. In New Zealand, Beca Group will outsource its datacentre during the course of the year.

VoIP and video conferencing received strong focus last year as part of the ongoing enablement and enhancement of company-wide collaboration. This year, the effect of social networking on the business is slowly becoming more visible, though CIO Robin Johansen concedes that, “the place of social networking in the enterprise is still being debated by management and progress will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary”.

Attention will be paid to BI, unified communications, wireless, business continuity/disaster recovery and cloud computing technologies over the coming months, as well.

ITIL evolution continues at Beca Group, with adherence to comprehensive standards and best practices important to the organisation.

Looking wider afield at the state of IT, as a “general observation”, says Johansen, immature IT governance standards in New Zealand have the undesirable effect of inhibiting economic growth. “There is a good standard available, but most boards are unaware of its existence and do not apply it. In addition to that, there are far too few directors with a strong grasp of either the standard or the technology.”
