Key IS projects this year: Document management, intranet.

At Datacom, ICT will be utilised to enable transactional efficiencies and create competitive advantages, explains Group chief operating officer Steve Matheson, both being rather pertinent given that ICT is “a capability we sell in its own right”.

Following on from strong growth in 2009 to 2010, ICT budgets and projects for Datacom Group are expected to be up as much as 10 percent this year. Across both the New Zealand and Australian arms of the business, document management and further intranet development will receive major IT focus. Staff numbers have increased since last year by more than 400, to more than 3300, across the Group, and the company is looking to hire more staff across the company’s offices in New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Named the 2010 Hi Tech New Zealand Company of the Year, it has delivered a number of high-profile customer solutions over the past year, including the roll-out of the Identity Verification Service (IVS) project with the Department of Internal Affairs that allows people to identify themselves securely to one or multiple government agencies with a single identity credential.

An upgrade to Datacom Group’s Great Plains CRM system is planned for 2011, as well as continued investment in multiple technological areas, including VoIP, wireless, unified communications, mobility, disaster recovery, FMIS, e-business, cloud computing, knowledge management and virtualisation.

Long-term investments in virtualisation, datacentres and shared infrastructure are showing returns for Datacom. It was named VMware Asia Pacific Service Provider Partner of the Year this year, as well as one of three finalists for the VMware Global Service Provider Partner award.
