Key IS projects this year: Under review given impact of Christchurch earthquake.

ICT budgets for Fairfax Media were being reviewed at the time of publication as a result of the Christchurch earthquakes. While investment will continue in several key areas — notably, VoIP, wireless, business continuity/disaster recovery, mobility and e-business — project plans are all being revisited following the earthquakes. It may take some months before the impact on upcoming works and projects is fully realised.

While cloud computing and virtualisation received attention last year, the coming months will likely see new focus on CRM, unified communications, FMIS and business intelligence solutions.

VoIP and unified communications have been the focus of significant research and investment over the past 24 months, with 2011 set to be the year a lot of new functionality and availability is rolled out to the wider organisation.

A datacentre migration begun in 2009 was completed at the end of last year, resulting in improved systems resiliency, reduced infrastructure footprint, along with increased flexibility and capacity to support staff mobility.

ICT is a huge enabler for the media giant, as it provides news to 2.9 million New Zealanders across its multi-media platforms. Fairfax publishes more than 90 titles and on average each day 400,000 unique browsers access the company’s news and information internet sites through computers and smartphones. Social media is an integral part of the company’s editorial strategy and these communication platforms rely on ‘always on’ ICT services.
