Key IS projects this year: Replacement of digital radiology system; maintenance/replacement programmes (servers, PC, printers); participation in the Central Region Information Services Plan business case; document management improvement; electronic referrals.

Integrated information systems that enhance patient flow and promote efficient service delivery by enabling workflow are seen as essential enablers for Hawkes Bay DHB. The strategic focus of Information Services is to enable and enhance patient flow and patient-focused care by providing integrated systems and access to accurate and relevant information where required.

Emphasis is placed on 24x7 availability of critical clinical and patient management systems, as clinical and administrative users become more reliant on electronic information systems, says Vidhya Makam, information services manager.

Makam notes that managing expectations as users become more technology-savvy and request the latest and most innovative gadgets, whilst also managing increasing demand for information solutions within limited staff and budget resources, has become one of the challenges facing the DHB.

Due to economic constraints, greater emphasis is placed on ensuring optimum return on investment, when investing in information solutions. The IS team is actively engaged in multiple key strategic projects, which include enhancements to information solutions to support primary/secondary integration; a document management improvement programme (with emphasis on taxonomy and nomenclature for clinical documents, as electronic medical records become more prevalent and the pivotal point for clinical workflow); and provision of advanced mobility solutions to support community workers.
