For locally-owned real estate company Barfoot & Thompson, ICT projects in 2011 are primarily focused on enablement and improvement — of customer service, technical capabilities for agents and employees and upgrades to systems and applications.

Enhancements to the company website, for instance, are expected to improve the online brand experience, explains CIO Simon Casey, while improved information access for sales people and property managers will enable better customer service. Planned wi-fi and PC upgrades will provide better tools to sales people and other staff.

Following the completion of a CRM deployment project last year, the ICT team will focus on wireless and mobility enablement in 2011. New mobile applications will aid sales and property managers by providing faster, secure and remote access to information. Important investments in business continuity/disaster recovery and cloud computing technologies will continue.

Casey has noted specific IT trends that have positively impacted Barfoot & Thompson’s business, such as the uptake of smart-phone and tablet devices; increasing the number of mobile and/or location aware devices and applications: enabling social media for the organisation’s sales people, engaging in online communities and the utilisation of online video. The 50-branch organisation, still run by the Barfoot and Thompson families after more than 80 years, relies on bespoke software for certain key IT needs, including FMIS and Business Intelligence/CPM. Mdaemon Email Server and Google Apps are used for the company email.
