Key IS projects this year: SharePoint 2010 upgrade, Server 2008 R2 domain upgrade; replacement of in car devices for service officers; survey tools.
The New Zealand Automobile Association’s (AA) 20 divisions are supported by 20 full-time IT staff, led by CIO Doug Wilson. While ICT budgets and project numbers are down slightly on last year, several key initiatives are planned.
“IT is intimately involved in all facets and activities of the business,” says Wilson. “It is regarded as a key enabler.”
As such it will be behind the replacement of in-car devices for the AA’s service officers and the adoption of new survey tools this year. Major upgrades are planned for 2011, to SharePoint 2010 and a domain upgrade to Server 2008 R2. A major redevelopment of the main aa.co.nz web site is underway, utilising Silverstripe to replace MOSS.
Much of the technology adopted by the AA is used to support customer engagement and customer services across its many divisions and branches. The AA was a leading participant in KiwiRAP last year, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, NZ Transport Agency, ACC and the New Zealand Police. As part of the International Road Assessment Programme, more than 10,000kms of state highway were videoed by a vehicle equipped with five cameras. The footage was then viewed in 100 metre sections and five kilometre road lengths were allocated a rating of one to five stars. These ratings have been made available to the New Zealand public via the internet.
Looking forward, ongoing investment will continue across several technology areas, including virtualisation, mobility, disaster recovery, VoIP, cloud computing, knowledge management and wireless. As well, there will be a focus on business intelligence solutions and traffic via the AA subsidiary company Geosmart.
