Key IS projects this year: Business process efficiency; record management.

For CIO Dr Phillip Lindsay, ICT is focused on supporting research activities and business efficiency for AgResearch, a leading scientific research organisation based across five campuses and 13 farms nationally.

AgResearch aims to help this country lead the world in creating sustainable wealth in the pastoral sector through leading-edge knowledge and technologies. ICT is a major driver of this mission, both supporting and enabling leading edge research and development in the dairy, meat and textile industries.

Two Christchurch facilities — the Lincoln Research Centre and Lincoln Science Centre — reopened on 28 February, just days after the devastating Canterbury earthquake, with the company website and help desk in place to update staff and other visitors of updates or changes.

Key projects will include a review and update of business process efficiency and an upgrade to the organisation’s records management system. ICT budgets will decrease slightly from last year due to economic constraints. However, significant new capital investment will be made in High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities that will be established in AgResearch to support two national consortia — in HPC and Genomics — that have been funded by the government.

Cost management continues to be important to the Crown Research Institute, with ICT solutions carefully evaluated for total cost of ownership before being adopted or implemented. Investments will continue in VoIP, wireless, virtualisation, CRM and cloud computing. As projects in knowledge management and disaster recovery have reached completion, attention will be paid to a new BI solution.
