“The tertiary sector, in some respects, has been largely insulated from the impacts of the economy,” says University of Waikato head of IT services Kevin Adamson. “During periods of recession, people tend to take the opportunity to reskill; hence student enrolments have remained steady.”

The tertiary provider has student numbers totalling more than 10,600 and the campus ICT Services teams of 94 supports their ICT needs, as well as those of the more than 1500 university staff.

ICT operational budgets and project numbers are up on last year, and will be focused on several key projects, including a staff migration to Google Apps; a finance system upgrade and business process review; implementation of Oracle project accounting across faculties to assist management of research projects; enhancement to PhD administration capability; enhancement to staff promotion systems; a CRM requirements definition; web enhancements; the implementation of a new data centre and completion of a VoIP upgrade.

Key projects will involve those that allow for the streamlining of administrative processes and enhancement of collaboration capability. Investment will be made across a wide arching array of technology solutions, including managed services, disaster recovery solutions, VoIP and wireless functionality, virtualisation, FMIS, CRM and unified communications.
