Best Pacific Institute of Education teaches the highest proportion of Pacific people of all tertiary providers in New Zealand, with 73 percent of its students identifying as being of Pacific Island descent. With New Zealand’s Pacific population (aged 15 to 39 years) expected to reach 12 percent by 2026, mainly in Auckland, the government has prioritised encouraging and enabling tertiary education for this country’s Pacific population. Information Services Manager, Adrian West, was unable to comment on 2011 ICT project plans for this MIS100 report.
The company runs its servers on a combination of Linux, Novell Netware and Windows 2003 operating systems. Its fleet of computers run on Novell and Windows XP, having been upgraded to Windows 7. Microsoft technologies are also used for email (Exchange) and database management software (MYSQL). Contracts with both Vodafone and Telecom cover the education provider’s telecommunications needs nationwide.
A focus on e-learning, enabled through ICT, supports the Institute’s current and prospective students. A student only needs a telephone connection at his or her home. Enrolling with Best’s e-learning curriculum means the company will provide the student with a computer, software and unlimited internet access. Nearly all education programmes at Best Pacific are available through Fresh-e, the school’s customised e-learning website. Login access to Fresh-e gives students the ability to talk to their tutors and support team via email, send messages to their classmates via chat rooms or blogs, and take part in class discussions.
