Key IS projects this year: Integrated Offender Management System; transformation and enhancements to support new business models; transition to IT outsourcing model including private cloud and WAN diversity; support of private management of the Mount Eden Corrections Facility Prison.
The Department of Corrections’ challenge is to address constraints in the IT environment and meet increasing business needs, while keeping within existing financial parameters.
In 2010 further ICT functions were outsourced. “This was a big change for the Department — particularly in regard to our vendor engagement model. We moved to a collaborative relationship with providers with clear boundaries of responsibility, and a focus on outcomes for our customers,” says CIO Jon Cumming. “Our infrastructure transformation will be completed this year and already our capacity to deliver and support core applications has increased significantly.”
Frontline staff numbers have grown, along with levels of adoption of IT to support the business priorities of reducing reoffending and increasing public safety. Though budgets and staff numbers are expected to remain constant through 2011, ICT projects will increase this year by 5 to 10 percent.
Key projects include enhancements and transformation of the Integrated Offender Management System to support new business models; the completion of transformation to the new IT outsourcing model (which includes private cloud services); diversification of WAN; and the support of private management of Mount Eden Corrections Facility.
Ongoing investments will continue in ERP, BI, virtualisation/cloud migration and disaster recover/business continuity, as well as the core Corrections applications. VoIP and mobile upgrade projects initiated last year have reached completion.
