In August this year, Intel announced that it would buy McAfee for US$48 a share in a deal valued at US$7.68 billion. In April, McAfee suffered an embarrassing episode when an antivirus update it had issued took a dislike to a valid Microsoft Windows file, with computers worldwide left without network access.

Just prior to that setback, the company launched its Cloud Secure programme, a new service for Software-as-a-Service providers to add additional security to their cloud deployments.

In the mobile space, it rolled out Endpoint Security 9.0, with support for platforms ranging from Windows and Apple Macintosh as well as Android-based hand-helds and the iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile smartphones.
