Symantec has continued on the acquisition path this year, scooping up the VeriSign identity and authentication business, and adding email and data encryption specialists PGP and GuardianEdge to its group. Additional merger and acquisition activity in the security space is likely to continue into the first quarter of 2011, according to Forrester Research. Following Intel’s acquisition of McAfee in August and Hewlett-Packard’s takeover of security software firm ArcSight in September, media reports speculate that a merger could be next for Symantec. The recent activity has buoyed Symantec shares, which hit a yearly low prior to the McAfee deal. Oracle, IBM and Microsoft are mentioned as potential buyers. Symantec has released a range of new products, including tools to prevent data loss through social media and to protect information in private clouds. Ulrika Hedquist
