Using its Steelhead appliances, Riverbed has traditionally targeted customers who want to speed up connections with datacentres. However, it recently introduced Virtual Steelhead — software that can run on VMware virtual machines.
The company also has plans to step into the cloud. It is launching Cloud Steelhead in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Network World. The cloud offering will include all the features of Riverbed’s Steelhead optimisation appliances, but also has features for service providers that will make it easier to create services around speeding up transactions over the wide-area network, the magazine says. There are also plans to develop a software client that will speed up the performance of hand-held devices and smartphones. Ulrika Hedquist
