EMC maintained its lead in the worldwide external disk storage systems market with 25.7 percent revenue share in the second quarter of 2010, says the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker. It also continued to rank number-one worldwide in the external RAID, networked storage, open SAN and Windows and Unix external RAID segments.

It is buying network-attached storage vendor Isilon Systems to align with EMC’s Atmos object storage products to provide a low-cost, scalable platform for managing large amounts of “Big Data”, referring to the growing flood of information generated by utilities, online media companies and other verticals. CEO Joe Tucci says this will leave EMC “well positioned at the intersection of cloud computing and Big Data”.
