Key IS projects this year: Storage management; backup and recovery; Server virtualisation; desktop application virtualisation; unified communications.

A focus on improving student learning outcomes and enhancing organisational efficiency continues to be a key ICT driver for NorthTec (Northland Polytechnic). “IT provides analytic information to assist management to understand and improve institutional performance,” says Xiaohui Xu, CIO and director learning innovation and technology services.

Significant ICT projects for 2010 in terms of budget or complexity will include both desktop application and server virtualisation across the polytechnic’s Dell, Windows and HP environments, as well as the implementation of new storage management and backup and recovery systems. Increased unified communications (UC) functionality will be rolled out organisation wide across the NorthTec Learning Gateway platform.

Investments in VoIP will aid the organisation in achieving significant cost savings through the adoption of relevant technology, and will contribute to the success of the aforementioned UC upgrades. As well, mobile and cloud computing will also receive attention from the ICT operational and project budget.

IT will support the polytechnic’s business objectives through the development of key competencies, as well as “provide greater access to proven quality learning approaches and enhance the effectiveness of pedagogy or learner engagement”, Xu explains.
