Key IS projects this year: 70 to 80 projects across three portfolios: State Highway (for maximising safe throughput of people and freight); Registers (for managing Access and Use to the network including managing changes to motor vehicle, drivers license and related external systems); and Enterprise (for improving the effectiveness of public transport and for improving customer service and reducing compliance costs).

Since its establishment on 1 August, 2008, the NZ Transport Agency (combining the expertise and functions of Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand), continues to build a better transport system for New Zealanders.

Having joined the NZTA in July 2009 from his role at ANZ New Zealand as head of technology — shared services, CIO Craig Soutar, along with deputy CIO Para Ganesan, is up to the significant task of managing 70 to 80 new projects across three portfolios this year, a project increase of up to 5 percent, despite constraints across budget and staffing. Soutar explains that for the past 18 months the focus for the NZTA has been on initiating a complex systems merger, as well as delivering existing and new information services to agreed service levels.

The shift of focus this year will be on completing the merger and helping to shape the future of the organisation by

developing the enterprise architecture needed to support the longer term outcomes and strategic priorities of the NZTA. From late 2010 and into 2011, significant programmes of work will be advanced to implement this new strategic agenda across the three portfolios of Registers, State Highways and Enterprise.

Ongoing business projects with significant IS components include traffic management system upgrades, driver licence and motor vehicle register changes, improved e-business capabilities, unified communications rollout, financial management information systems, virtualisation, business continuity and disaster recovery.

Under the wider umbrella of the NZTA sit 7000 outlets requiring differing levels of ICT support, service delivery and planning. These include 3500 independent and NZTA authorised garages/workshops for Warrants of Fitness (WoF) Online and up to600 motor vehicle re-licensing and driver licensing outlets. Additionally, the NZTA IS team is involved in several key relationships with external agencies including the Ministry of Justice and NZ Police, each of which can influence or assist in making decisions regarding Information Systems planning for the NZTA.
