Key IS projects this year: Move from Telecom to Vodafone for all telephone (desk/mobile/PABX/VIOP) and data services; SharePoint 2010 implementation; Data Warehouse Extension Project.
The Silver Fern Farms’ ICT department began the process of restructuring in late 2009, with the goal of realigning its IT resources with a new company strategy that includes a greater IT focus on support services and technology delivery. The farmers’ co-operative is New Zealand’s largest processor and exporter of sheep, lamb, beef and venison.
A move from Telecom to Vodafone for all telephony and data services, including desk, mobile, PABX and VoIP, signals a major shift for the ICT department, and is one of the most significant projects expected to be completed in 2010, says recently appointed IT manager Nigel Rickerby, who has been with Silver Fern Farms since 2001. He has taken over his new role following the departure of Eduard Walthert from his position as MIS manager after 13 years.
Investment in Microsoft business intelligence platforms and knowledge management will also be crucial this year. “We are looking to invest in business intelligence with the goal of greater visibility and insight into our entire supply chain — from plate to pasture” explains Rickerby. This includes a data warehouse extension project that will improve control and assist SFF to leverage its master data.
Enhanced consolidation, collaboration and information lifecycle management are expected from a planned SharePoint 2010 implementation, giving Silver Fern Farms better access to data and the ability to rapidly respond to changing business needs.
