For Southern Cross Healthcare — a group of more than 20 divisions and subsidiaries across New Zealand including 14 hospitals, MCS, Care Advantage, activa, SX Hospitals and the group’s head office — there are two major objectives for ICT this year. They are to reduce internal costs through efficiencies and to meet the demand for growth.

The group’s financial management system application will undergo an upgrade, with some segments to be replaced completely. VoIP implementations will be rolled out over the coming months, with a network upgrade expected to reach completion before the end of the year. The patient management application utilised by Southern Cross Healthcare will be expanded, introducing new functionality and automation.

April Walker, GM IS for the Medical Care Society, says that “this year will see continued investment on VoIP technology, with the rollout of new call recording solutions for Southern Cross call centres and further investment in its e-commerce channel.” For IS manager of Southern Cross Hospitals, Colin Thrush, the focus will be similar.

“This year will also see continued investment on VoIP and videoconferencing technology,” he says. Wireless technology will be explored and invested in over the coming months, while business continuity and disaster recovery will also receive strong focus by the joint IS departments. ICT budgets across the group’s health-related businesses have increased by 5 percent this year, with the residual effect being a predicted increase in ICT staff by the same amount.
