The Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) IT services department services four campuses — two in Wellington, and one each in Auckland and Christchurch. More than 12,000 students are educated at WelTec, the largest polytechnic in the Wellington region. Last year, key IT focus was placed on the redevelopment of the main Petone campus, with video conferencing, webcasting, podcasting and e-learning functionality rolled out across all four campus sites. CIO Brian Rumblelow was unable to comment on key projects for 2010 at the time the MIS100 went to press.
A Bachelor of Engineering Technology was introduced in March this year, with WelTec chief executive Linda Sissons explaining the new degree to the Dominion Post as the result of collaboration between industry and tertiary education providers — including Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Wintec, Manukau Institute of Technology, Unitec and Otago Polytechnic — to establish a standardised, degree programme that would provide students with the skills the industry needed.
The Institute offers a Citrix Access Gateway secure network via its main website, to enable remote access for students and staff, proving ‘anytime, anywhere’ access control along with data security. Student email and file storage is provided via Microsoft Outlook Live technology. WelTec’s e-learning system, LearnZone, is available to registered students and has been designed to provide access to course resources such as group forums, instant messenger, links to related websites, assignment details and more.
