The Saint Kentigern Trust Board, responsible for private Auckland schools Saint Kentigern College, Saint Kentigern School and Saint Kentigern School for Girls — Corran, seeks to provide a technologically advanced learning environment for both students and teachers, with ready connectivity and accessibility. In fact, Saint Kentigern College is thought to be the first wireless campus in this country. Each student has a laptop computer equipped with all the necessary software tools, through which they access services and resources available to them locally and on the internet. At the College, students have the opportunity to study network engineering through the Cisco Networking Academy Programme.

Director of ICT, Walter Chieng, sees the role of ICT as integral to the board’s business objectives, as a way to provision and enable administration, communication and innovative teaching and learning. While ICT budgets have not increased this year, ICT projects will continue to move forward, with continued investments made in wireless technologies and business continuity/disaster recovery. “We have built a strong ICT infrastructure and continue to reinforce this to cater for administration, teaching and the learning requirements of users,” says Chieng. “Our strength at the college in ICT has always been the integration of its use, right across the curriculum.”

Virtualisation projects initiated last year are expected to reach completion this year. All three campuses have benefited from this development, as the organisation continues to work towards ICT as a service to the various schools. Cloud computing is an area of interest to the organisation, as it continues to explore opportunities to manage and deliver services effectively and efficiently to the college’s user base.
