CIO Nigel Prince says the ICT team at MAF seeks increased value for money through improved efficiencies and leveraging existing capability. “In particular, we support cross agency collaboration including the use of our Joint Border Management and Single Trade Window systems — and simplification and standardisation of IT systems and infrastructure,” says Prince.
In 2009, MAF plans to continue investing in business intelligence and knowledge management systems that deliver insight into the organisation. Spending on software and server virtualisation technologies will also be extended from last year to extend the operational benefits MAF has observed.
Prince says while these ICT projects are important, much of this year’s budget allocation will be used to manage existing assets better — and to replace server hardware. After the successful completion of the Climate Change Information System, MAF is looking forward to working with stakeholders on key initiatives including Joint Border Management, Single Trade Window systems and the National Animal Identification and Tracing project.
MAF has strong IT outsource partnerships with providers including Unisys for core infrastructure operation and maintenance, systems and network management and the help desk; Revera for hosting, storage and backup; and Topaz, Eagle and Fronde for applications development.
