NZ Post continues to focus on productivity to deliver appropriate cost savings to right size the business and optimise supply chains and channels. To maximise yield, NZ Post seeks to capture opportunities to grow revenue from current products, services and customers, and to grow the business through the development of new propositions aligned with core capabilities targeted at new market areas.

Tracy Voice, general manager business enabling, says the key focus of the IT team is to be “smart with our technology delivery through the drive to simplicity, effective service performance, continued automating of business process and the support of competitive activity through appropriate technologies”.

Voice says in the short-term cost is a continued focus, with a key factor being the move from a fixed to variable cost base wherever possible. Reflecting the current economy, IT operational and project budgets are down slightly on 2008 figures, however NZ Post is forging ahead with prudent investments in software and server virtualisation technologies, business continuity and disaster recovery systems, field force mobilisation and utility computing. Voice says the benefit of utility computing is it allows the business groups to have the flexibility to opt in or out of a service offering, with minimal or no effect to other groups. She says this model needs to be tested and that Postal Services as a business aims to leverage managed services provided by the “cloud”.

Web channels are a further point of focus, with Web 2.0 developments underway. These are designed to accurately meet the online needs of NZ Post customers and their desire for improved online interaction and access to online services.
