Key IS projects this year: Implementation of new core business applications - HR and Payroll system, student management system, and Sharepoint systems for records management; new gigabit core and distribution layer network switches.

Whitireia Community Polytechnic has six campus sites in four cities. Delivering quality learning outcomes and expanding the flexible learning environment for international, multi-ethnic and diverse student groups are among the polytechnic’s strategic goals, says IT manager Hylton Tuckett.

ICT Services at Whitireia has experienced significant change over the past two years and the expectation is that ICT is now able to deliver solutions that make a difference.

Whilst there have been generic ICT solutions delivered, the infrastructure platform is now able to make a difference by deploying business solutions to meet expanding tertiary education needs and achieve business strategies.

A new collaborative learning space, or learning commons, is opening shortly. It encompasses a mix of fixed work stations, oval tables for group work, access to loan laptops with wireless access to the campus network, library resources, helpdesk and student learning services. Tuckett says the project illustrates how ICT enables technology environments, in this case for the non-IT academic faculty, the Faculty of Health, Education and Social Sciences.

A key business solution deployed over the past year is smart card technology for individual staff and student identity, room access control, network printing, photocopying, scanning and library resource management. This solution includes student management, print and copy management, financials, security and library server-based systems.

Another key solution to be deployed over the next two years will be the systems and processes to manage all information for compliance with the Public Records Act.
