Key IS projects this year: HRIS; core switch upgrade; data warehouse creation.
Wellington Institute of Technology (Weltec) is engaged in major redevelopment of its Petone campus, while working towards goals including the implementation and use of better business intelligence, more remote delivery of tutorials and the delivery of new courses.
CIO Brian Rumbelow says Weltec is working through a core switch upgrade for additional capacity and a possible connection to the KAREN network. Other initiatives are to build a data warehouse solution for business intelligence and knowledge management, and to implement a new HRIS system — ERMLive.
To facilitate remote delivery of course material, video conferencing, webcasting, e-learning and podcasting technologies have been implemented. Additional terminals are required for teaching and this will result in the existing Citrix Farm being expanded accordingly. Other projects that may start this year include wireless networking coverage in open areas and mobile data connectivity.
Key IT projects for 2008 included a migration from Novell to Microsoft; implementation of IT governance based on CoBIT; upgrades and enhancements to business intelligence and financial software tools; standard hardware upgrade and server virtualisation; replacement of the imaging and application deployment system; implementation of roaming profiles; a distributed filing system replicating data across multiple campuses.
Weltec conducts most IT functions in-house, with the exception of PC maintenance which is outsourced to Silicon. As well, Silicon is WelTec’s preferred server and desktop supplier and delivers a complete technology solution including ongoing servicing, training and ad-hoc support. Fuji-Xerox is WelTec’s document management partner and its technology, based on Microsoft’s SharePoint, will be a key component to managing WelTec’s intellectual property.
