Key IS projects this year: Records management; reporting — BI; compliance; productivity improvements.

During 2009, AgResearch’s key focus is on extending its new high-definition, videoconferencing system to desktop devices — and fully integrating this with its phone and other communication systems as part of a unified system.

Another key area of activity involves continuing to fully implement a new records management and knowledge management system. These applications are essential to allow AgResearch to be compliant with the Public Records Act, as well as uncovering rich knowledge assets that exist within the company.

A key focus for management systems is the development of a new reporting system that quantifies knowledge capital, environmental capital as well as the traditional financial focus of reporting systems. CIO Phillip Lindsay says the IT team anticipates that during the year AgResearch will implement business intelligence tools to assist with this reporting project.

AgResearch is also carrying out a major refresh of its LAN infrastructure to provide a gigabyte to the desktop and to also provide wider wireless coverage at all its campuses. The opportunity will also be taken to provide for power over Ethernet, for a future upgrade to a full VoIP phone system.

“We have recently been involved in a significant cost benchmarking exercise and have been pleased to see that our costs are at the low end for a knowledge-based business, with service levels being significantly above average,” he says.

Technology changes such as virtualisation and more highly automated management systems, has allowed AgResearch to concentrate its human resources on directly helping staff achieve a good level of expertise in their use of computer resources. This in turn means IS staff can concentrate on higher value activities.
