Waitakere City Council serves a population of more than 61,000 households and 200,000 people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. The council is committed to the city’s Growth Management Strategy with a focus on the New Lynn Redevelopment Programme, Hobsonville and Massey North/Westgate Development, as well as infrastructure management and wider Auckland governance.
Group manager IM, John Johnson, says the council will use existing IT infrastructure and support systems, and where required will implement new identified improvements. This prudency is warranted in the current economic environment — there has been a budget drop of more than 10 per cent on IT capital expenditure for the current year, and for ICT projects. IT staff numbers are down by more than five per cent.
Business improvement initiatives, records and document management, as well as a consolidation programme are the most significant ICT project areas for Waitakere City Council in 2009.
Like all Auckland councils, Waitakere City Council will be working towards accommodating requirements aligned with new Auckland governance legislation. Johnson says this may lead to a change in ICT project priorities in the short term.
Waitakere City Council has an IT team of 50 staff for core IT functions and 38 for non-core IT functions. The team conducts most ICT functions in-house, with the exception of HR payroll, which is outsourced to Jade.
