The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) offers more than 130 programmes including certificates, diplomas, degrees and post graduate study, as well as SIT2LRN flexible learning, vocational preparation and personal development courses.
SIT offers a Zero Fee Scheme that allows New Zealand citizens and permanent residents to study without incurring tuition fees. This applies to both on-campus and flexible mixed mode programmes. SIT’s main campus is in Invercargill, with satellite campuses in Christchurch, Gore, Te Anau and Queenstown.
ICT responsiveness and adaptability are key to meeting changing business needs, says IT co-ordinator Paul Jennings. “Server virtualisation allows us to provide additional services at a lower cost and in a timely manner,” he says. SIT will invest further in virtualisation technologies in 2009, along with an extension of wireless infrastructure and an upgrade of disaster recovery and business continuity strategies and systems.
Jennings says the largest ICT investments for 2009 will be an Allied Telesis core network replacement. It is an update designed to enhance the existing Gigabit fibre network backbone, allowing for redundancy of paths in the network and greater throughput to outlying campuses. As well, an HP Blade Server technology implementation has meant further consolidation of remaining physical servers and a greener footprint in the server room, and there was a server room environment upgrade. Encompassed in this project are three-phase power, uninterruptable power supply, smoke detection and process cooling including humidity control, says Jennings.
SIT outsources PC maintenance, application development, network management and help desk functions to Gen-i Southland with a partnership agreement.
