Key IS projects this year: Server virtualisation; unified communications; learning management system; business intelligence.
The NorthTec polytechnic seeks to enhance its reputation as an educational institution, along with its relationships with local business and the community. Improving the student experience along with the capability of the staff to do their jobs and the organisational culture are paths to realising these goals, and CIO Xiaohui Xu says improving ICT infrastructure is also a key component.
“Excellence in ICT systems and infrastructure at NorthTec strengthens its capabilities in the use of technology for learning, administration and business growth.” says Xu.
While ICT operational and project budgets are slightly down on previous years, Xu says IT staff numbers for 2009 are at the same level of the previous year. NorthTec continues work on important ICT projects including an organisation-wide desktop computer replacement, server and network infrastructure upgrade and further development on NorthTec’s Learning Gateway, (an education delivery platform that integrates unified communications, student information access, learning management and learning facilitation toolkits). Other areas of investment include system backup and recovery, server and network monitoring, as well as virtualisation; and work on student management, CRM and business intelligence systems.
Xu says e-business is an understandably important focus area, along with Web 2.0, 3D visualisation and the mobile application development — all of which are critical to ensure relevant and useful interactions with potential and existing students. The new development will assist NorthTec to address its distributed and diversified network of learners, and strengthen NorthTec’s
capability and capacity in the northern region.
