Key IS projects this year: Replace/upgrade emergency department information system; replace/upgrade clinical workstation; replace/upgrade lab system; replace/upgrade pharmacy system; begin process (with partner DHBs) to select Health Management System; replace PABX.
The Information Services function is recognised as a key strategic enabler within Northland District Health Board (NDHB). Darren Manley, director information services, says the tactical and strategic programmes of IT work under way are pivotal to NDHB’s continued progress towards its population health and business goals.
The three largest ICT projects on the agenda in terms of budget for 2009 are the Health Management System, new ED information system and clinical workstation upgrade.
Manley says DHBs’ information services already run lean, and it can be a challenge to manage high demand for improved clinical information services. In this context, it’s difficult to measure the impact from the current economic climate on IT budget and
staffing. “The new government and the economic climate together are putting a spotlight on [ICT staffing and budgets], but we continue to manage both these resources very tightly to ensure limited resources are deployed where the need and benefit is greatest,” says Manley.
Last year saw the completion of a four-year programme to strengthen core infrastructure and the services offered. The DHB invested heavily in rebuilding its datacentre, shared storage, the local and wide area networks, blade technology, Citrix, rationalisation of its desktop operating system and standard office tools; as well as the IS organisation itself. In parallel, local and regional information governance arrangements have been strengthened.
