Solnet Group and subsidiaries Solnet Solutions and Verve grew substantially last year, in line with the Solnet business plan, says managing director Mark Botherway.
“But given we are in an election year and with the global credit crunch, it’s prudent to plan for a modest year. You could argue the hurdle rates for some projects have been increased,” he says.
In 2007 Solnet Group grew at twice the IT market rate. This year it is projected to grow at about the same rate (between 5 and 8 per cent), says Botherway.
“We have placed considerable emphasis on growing our consulting capability, helping clients complete due diligence and business cases and write business plans. We are moving outside the IT realm in that respect, to engage [at a] higher level with our clients and their businesses.”
Botherway says customers are ‘bullish’ regarding their IT programmes of work — with significant projects not abandoned, though they may take longer to approve in the current economy.
“We have delivered some high-profile portal projects in Australasia this year and have been successful in delivery of pragmatic Agile projects.
“We understand the reality of delivering true Agile projects in the commercial space and have achieved this in Australia through a project team domiciled in Auckland,” says Botherway.
New customers for Solnet Group include insurance organisation SunCorp and Meridian Energy. Botherway says projects requiring collaboration, document workflow, and document management tools are in demand.
“These are closely linked to the work being done in the portals space. It’s about eliminating paper and time from workflows.”
Solnet is in the midst of an internal branding exercise around values, attributes and desired behaviour, which Botherway says is timely following a period of above-average growth.
“We have been growing as fast as we can manage, this is an internal programme to lift everyone’s awareness around integrity and professionalism. We also have a plan to reduce our environmental footprint, which we have measured.”
