The sun is shining on Brisbane-based wireless network design consultancy CBO, which has gained a reputation for supplying solar-powered wifi mesh access points to remote work sites like mines and railways.

CBO is making the most of the mining boom as it also fits these devices on the companys own custom-made trailers featuring a photovoltaic panel and battery pack, though they can also be powered by a diesel generator or mains supply.

The company claims more than 50 customers across Australia and Southeast Asia, in the mining, education, hospital/medical and warehousing industries.

CBO claims a couple of “firsts” for Cisco integrators in Australia — deploying 75 MESH links for a coal mine in Queensland, said to be the largest Cisco MESH outside of the US. Recently, CBO completed its first Cisco enterprise 802.11n in Australia.

Such devices can use many differing types of communications equipment, such as a Telstra Next G modem for backhaul, or whatever link the customer would like, including a satellite or microwave to a point of presence.

CBO claims to be a vendor agnostic expert in WLAN and mobility design, implementation and professional services design. It has no sales staff, preferring a channel to market strategy.

“CBO complements our partners by having extensive experience in both the Active (Layers 1,2,3 of Networking) and Passive (RF and physical installation of cables/ antennas/manufacture of brackets/enclosures, etc) aspects of true enterprise wireless networking,” says CEO Mark McGregor.

“Of our 25 staff, our in-source model encompasses all but three as technical. CBO boasts a tight-knit team of project managers; network engineers; RF engineers; technical writer/CAD operators and field engineers,” he says. Darren Greenwood
