Tripwire opened its Australian office in Melbourne in November 2007, looking for quick success — an expectation that seems to have come about.
The company’s flagship product, Tripwire Enterprise, helps enterprises reduce security risks and attain compliance with external regulations and internal policies. Tripwire products aim to ensure system configurations are set according to policy, and kept in that state. Tripwire helps IT achieve and maintain a trusted system state.
This year Tripwire released ConfigCheck, a free utility that checks the security of virtual servers. About 40,000 users have logged on to the ConfigCheck site to download a copy of the software or explore its capabilities.
ConfigCheck assesses the configurations of a VMware ESX hypervisor, comparing them against VMware security guidelines, which are best-practice recommendations for optimal security in virtual environments, and provides precise remediation instructions if any are needed.
The latest version of Tripwire Enterprise, version 7.5 V, also emphasises management of the virtualisation environment. It helps organisations address the uncontrolled multiplication of virtual servers, known as “VM sprawl” and keeps virtualised servers secure and compliant with policy.
While the company declines to release any financial figures, Australia-New Zealand manager Billy Louden says predictions for the local market have been exceeded. Interest from users in this part of the world centres on preventing unauthorised change to configuration rather than compliance with regulations, though that is a developing market, he says.
Tripwire Australia currently has four staff, but this is expected to double in the next calendar year. Stephen Bell
