ANZ Bank overhauls technology units

The global restructure brings major changes to the way the company manages its information technology operations.

A global restructure under way at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has brought major changes to the way the company manages its information technology operations. The changes have meant the appointment of new general managers within the bank's technology operations, with several more senior positions yet to be filled.

The plan, part of the broader OneANZ strategy announced by chief executive Mike Smith last month, has also led to the establishment of functional groups to manage technology operations.

The structure had been designed to "support ANZ to grow and become a technology-based, super-regional bank", chief information officer Peter Dalton said in an internal memo to staff. The plan included measures to centralise some functions, Mr Dalton said.

In September, ANZ announced it would reorganise its broader operations into three geographical units, a plan that swung into action last week.

ANZ's operations have been split into businesses covering Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific, as well an internationally focused business for institutional clients.

"While our new structure is aligned with ANZ's new business model, many of the accountabilities of the technology leadership team roles have changed," Mr Dalton said in the email to staff.

"Our business-facing roles are now primarily responsible for our key business relationships, delivery of the three-year technology plan for each business, program deliver and risk management within their business."

A number of key appointments have been made, with Chris Karopoulos named as general manager for technology, Australia, and Peter Lawrence holding the same title, as well as that of chief information officer, for New Zealand.

Brian Clark has been given the general manger technology title for the Asia-Pacific business, while Chris Amirtharajah will hold the same post within the institutional business.

As part of the restructure, ANZ's global technology functions, covering areas including human resources, finance, risk, shared services and workplace technology, will be overseen by recently recruited general manager of technology group functions Marcello Martino.

Mr Martino joined ANZ last month after a stint as chief operating officer for customer service group GAPbuster Worldwide.

Kieran Griffiths has been appointed as ANZ's deputy CIO and given the title of general manager for technology service and infrastructure management, a position which brings together responsibility for the support of applications and infrastructure across the bank globally.

Three appointments at the same functional general manager level remain to be made, with solution delivery and global architecture positions, as well as the newly expanded technology risk management and global information security area, all being handled by interim managers at present.

Mr Dalton said that India-based general manager of technology strategy and business management Ranjani Ranganath would be responsible for overall management of ANZ's technology business, and would continue to run the bank's operations in Bangalore.
